Intro

Sheldon Cooper is an academic overachiever, highly goal-driven, and incredibly smart. Sheldon is known as what Germans would refer to as a Wunderkind.

This guide is a deep dive into his study habits and mindset that made him a straight-A student, while making it easy for you to integrate them into your own study routine. So let’s go! <3

P.S.: This doesn’t mean that he doesn’t need tutoring like the rest of us sometimes do.

Table of Contents

Rule No. 1: To Memorize Everything

Sheldon and his brain are out of this world, as Sheldon himself acknologed it thought the series.  But even so, there are a few memorization techniques you can try:

  • Memory Palaces
  • Mnemonic Image Method
  • Active Recall & spaced-out repetition

Rule No. 2: To Read Fast

Sheldon reads books incredibly quickly. There are a few techniques out there to help you learn how to do the same, saving you precious time when preparing for exams.

  • Previewing and Mind Mapping
  • Perceptual Expansion
  • Meta Guiding
  • Reducing Subvocalization

Rule No. 3: Pay Attention in Class and Ask Questions

Sheldon is always seen sitting in the front row, paying attention in class and raising his hand whenever something isn’t clear or when he has suggestions.

So ask questions if you don’t understand something, there’s no such thing as a stupid question.

Rule No. 4: Productive Routines and Good Habits

Our bodies need routine. It doesn’t have to be as rigid as Sheldon’s, but having a routine can make life easier by saving you time when deciding what to eat, wear, or how to spend your free time (but don’t feel as if you have to use the magic 8 ball like Sheldon did). That’s also why people like Steve Jobs wore the same outfit every day.

Rule No. 5: Seek Guidance or Get a Tutor

Sheldon is reaching out to others in his field, especially his professors, always seeking guidance, new challenges, or simply discussing his or others’ work to gain a fresh perspective.

You can start small by connecting more often with classmates to compare and discuss your work, ask for tips and advice on how to improve in the future.

Rule No. 6: Stay-Up-To-Date in Your Field

Sheldon always tunes in when something exciting happens in the world of science. Of course, keeping track of everything is nearly impossible, but you can carve out just 10 minutes a day (or every other day) to catch up on the latest developments.

Being informed about recent discoveries and events in your field doesn’t just deepen your knowledge and believe me when I say that people will automatically regard you as an intelligent person.

Rule No. 7: Teach Others

You don’t have to lecture your friends like Sheldon might, but sharing what you’ve learned with others actually helps you remember it better.

It’s similar to the Feynman Technique, which involves explaining a concept in simple terms to fully understand it. Got some random fun facts? Share those too (just make sure you know your audience and read the room!).

Rule No. 8: Use a Whiteboard and Journal

Wherever Sheldon goes, there’s always a whiteboard nearby. Writing ideas on a large scale helps him reconnect with his earlier thought process, let’s just call it a TRAIN of thought.

And when genius strikes, you’ll want to be ready. That’s why a bonus tip is to carry a journal with you. Writing things down not only preserves the idea, but also helps you process and internalize it more deeply.

Some of the most brilliant people kept diaries: Marie Curie, Leondardo da Vinci, Charles Darwin and Thomas Edison.
