How to Study Like Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger’s Study Routines and  Mindset for Academic Success

Table of Contents

Hermione Granger is the academic weapon. She is highly competitive and extremely goal-driven. She loves to educate herself (and also share her knowledge with others) on various topics. She frequently gets lost in her studies and loves to work hard to achieve her academic goals.

This guide is a deep dive into her study habits and mindset that made her a straight-A student, while making it easy for you to integrate them into your own study routine. So let’s go! <3

Rule No. 1: Be prepared. Study and plan ahead.

“I checked this out weeks ago for a bit of light reading.”

One of the most effective study methods is to plan weeks in advance of exams. This way, you have plenty of time to prepare. If you study for a few hours a day, your brain can more easily memorize the information you feed it. Review the material over and over again. Repetition is the be-all and end-all.

Also, use a homework planner to schedule your homework as well as your study sessions. Once you have written down your schedule, stick to it and follow through. You can do it!

Rule No. 2: Assignments and Homework

“I’ve learned all our course books by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough.”

Needless to say write down asigments and do them right away, idealy the day they are given. You can use the extra days to go over them and perfect them.

Rule No. 3: Read, listen to informative podcasts and watch documentaries: Get as much information as you can.

“Run like you have to get to the library.”

A more laid-back way to learn new things is to read books, listen to podcasts, or watch documentaries.

It depends on what works for you and how you learn and remember things best.

Some learn better when they read, others are auditory learners, and still others find it easier to remember information when they watch videos or documentaries.

Stay curious and focus on the book, podcast, or documentary, and take notes. By writing down information (preferably with pen and paper), our brain consolidates the information.

Rule No. 4: Teaching others and being there to help them.

“Stop, stop stop! You’re going to take someone’s eye out. Besides, you’re saying it wrong. It’s Levi-o-sa, not Levio-sar.”

Hermione can often be seen studying in the library or in the Gryffindor common room. Studying with others and teaching others can make learning more interesting. You could try studying with a friend, but one who won’t distract you.

After each study session, share what you’ve learned with your friends or your favourite study buddy.

Study groups can also be helpful.

Rule No. 5: Be interactive in class and get involved.

“That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger, are you incapable of restraining yourself, or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?” – Severus Snape

Hermione is probably the most interactive student at Hogwarts. She often raises her hand and speaks up. She is the one who can answer all the professors’ questions with ease.

Being interactive in class is more of a habit, so make it yours. It’s fun and motivates you to learn. Every now and then, it is good to challenge ourselves and step out of our comfort zone.

Rule No. 6: Active Recall and Memorization

You know everything. How is it that she knows everything?” – Ron Weasley

Hermione does not study to forget. She has an incredible memory and finds it quite easy to recall information. She does so mainly by connecting what she has just learned with what she already knows. After many years of practicing how to connect information in her mind like a puzzle, she does it effortlessly.

There are a few simple tricks and study methods to help you memorize things better:

  • Connect newly learned material with what you already know
  • The Feynman Method
  • Flashcards (make flashcards on the go)
  • Quiz yourself / get quizzed by others
  • Mind palace
  • Skimming through your notes regularly
